A Gem of a Murder by Mariah Lynne is a Seabliss Island Mystery. Mariah Linley had moved to Seabliss a few years ago and had opened her own video store. She loved the place since it was small and pretty quiet. One day she found Jocko, a good friend of hers, dead. Even though the police thought that he died of a heart attack she instantly knew it was a murder. Since he was like a father to her she promised to find his murderer. With the help of her best friend Moonbeam, the local psychic, she began her own investigation. As the events unfolded Mariah learned a lot about Jocko and found herself in dangerous situations.
It’s a very unique and kind of unusual mystery. It’s set in 1986 in a small town. The plot is interesting and engaging. It has very detailed descriptions that paint an incredible scenery which easily transports you there. The mystery has a steady and slow build. The events unfolded themselves from early on and at times it created a bit of confusion because it made it difficult to find the murderer.
The characters were quirky and when they joined forces they did great surprising things. The only thing that seemed odd to me was their inner monologues. My favorite parts were Moonbeam’s interactions with the spirits.
This is a lovely cozy mystery perfect for those who love this genre. I highly recommend this and I will rate it with 4 stars.
